Hi.  Good to share something (finally) on ADD Connect!  I love this website and come here often and especially on days when I need some big time encouragement.  I hope I can share something today that might give back some of what’s been generously given to me.

I was diagnosed with ADD as an adult woman late in life.  For years, I had been treated for depression.  I don’t doubt I had (and still occassionally) struggle with depression.  ADD, however, has been my primary struggle and when I was diagnosed, that magical light came on that I hear many fellow ADDers mention upon diagnosis…..the same one that brings so much relief.  Part of my ADD management involves medication.  But another part involves diet and exercise.  Oddly enough, it was through my personal trainer at my gym that I learned about a great ADD tool called Personal Kanban.  When I met with him for a training session one day and he saw me fumbling with my crazy collection of sticky notes with things to discuss, I think he felt kinda sorry for me (lol).  I shared with him that I have ADD and that led to a discussion about Personal Kanban.  Had I heard of it?  I had not, but was curious.

He tried to explain it to me and I will try to do so, too.  But, he lent me a copy of the book, Personal Kanban, by Jim Benson and Tonianne DeMaria Barry.  I would suggest getting the book (if you are up to the task of reading it….with an ADD brain, we all know how ‘fun’ that can be!  Give it a try, though.  I am glad I did!).  The book explains it better than I can.  Furthermore, you can find information online about the subject. The name sounds weird and I had my doubts when he mentioned it.  But it’s nothing weird at all…I promise!  I’ve found that it’s been a gift to me….someone who once thought I’d always been one who never finishes what she starts.

In a nutshell, Personal Kanban is about visualizing your work (your goals…what you want to do…projects or whatever you want to call it) and limiting your work in progress ( using your hyperfocus skills and focusing on ONE thing at a time vs multitasking and doing what I hate most…...bumbling from one thing to the next without any kind of order or completion.  I call that, “bumping into walls” and I was doing it ALL the time until I began to read this book and put the very simple principles into practice).  I won’t say that I am a master at achieving goals yet ( still bump into walls alot)....but I am finding that I am getting more done each day AND doing the things that are important to me and that help me reach my goals and finish what I start! Yay!  I hope this helps and encourages!  Thanks for letting me share today!
