Just Diagnosed With ADHD (Children)

1st day adderall, concerns

My 6 year old son, just diagnosed ADHD/combined, started adderall today. Gave him 5mg 2x today. He was talking none stop, repeating himself, jumping from one thing to the next, insomnia. Is this normal and if so how long will it last? Concerned about him return to school from break if he is going to act this way.

Try 1/2 of the pill twice a day at first and than after a week try 1 full pill twice a day and see if you see improvements. My son who is 7 started that way and it’s been the best pill out of all we have tried.

My son is 7yrs old, almost 60lbs.  He started by taking approx 75% of what was in the Adderall XR 5mg and that worked great.  After several months we are up to taking the entire 5mg and he has adjusted well.  I remember whe we first tried meds he seemed too amped up and that is why we lowered to just 75% of what was in the 5mg capsule.  unless your son weighs much more that 60lbs, starting with 10mg seems like a lot.  5mg of the extended release has worked great for my 7yr old.  Good luck!

My son takes 5 mg twice a day 1 for the first 4 hours and the other 5 mg the other 4 hours. We first had the pill cut in half and it was a great start so he actually took 2.5 mg the first 4 hours and 2.5 the second 4 hours that a total of 5mg for the day. My son is 7 and weights 50 lbs. I tried all the pills and this was the best! I would love to hear how it works out for you. If he has insomnia we gave my son Melatonin Chewable tablet we bought at Trader Joes, it’s a peperment flavored and my son enjoyed it. We halved that pill too as it comes 500 mcg. Doctor recommended half the Melatonin and we didn’t give it to him every night just when he needed it and now we don’t use it. Would love to hear how the new change 1/2 of a pill works out. Wishing you much success!

Keep in mind, stimulant medications are not dosed by weight like most medications. The amount you need to get positive results will depend on brain chemistry and other biological factors. A 200 lb. man could need only 5 mg and a 6 year old boy that’s 50 lbs may require 30 or 40 mg. That’s what makes getting these meds right so tough! That’s also why it is so important to start at the lowest point and work up only if necessary.

Give it time.  One dose isn’t really enough to make much difference when first starting a medication.  Watch it for a week, keep notes of symptoms.
