Age 7 on Vyvanse

My son is turning 7 next month and has been on Vyvanse for about 3 weeks.  He has made a huge improvement in school and I see a big difference at home with homework etc… Are there any side effects that you have noticed in your children?

So far it’s worked that best for our son, too (40mg), after finding that Ritalin la and concerta didn’t last long enough in his system to get him thru school. It seems to be more gentle on his system coming & going, but I do find that he’s pretty moody on it and can get pretty blue. Especially when not involved in something fun. But none of the meds are perfect and so far we’re pleased with this one. Best of luck!!

Thank you for your response.  My son can turn blue very quickly as well.

My son has been taking Vyvanse for about 4yrs now. He had tried so many different things and I noticed an immediate difference with this med!! It does affect his appetite and we struggle to maintain weight. In the summer months I take him off and use a non-stimulant to help him gain weight. When he first started taking it his ears would turn red..sounds weird, but it did!

We went from Adderall to Vyvanse back to Adderall.  We felt the Vyvanse didn’t work as well as the Adderall in controlling impulsive behaviors.  However, from comments by others on this website, I’ve noticed more anger and emotions from my son.  I think he’s ok for the 8 hrs he’s in school, but in the after school program and at home, it can be dicey.  I’m going to check back with his doctor about the meds.

By the way, I love the support and comments from the people on this website.  It’s been so helpful to hear what works and what doesn’t.

My son, age 12 had been on Concerta for quite a while and we had to keep increasing the dose (up to 72mg)  to get through the school day and keep focused. And it wasn’t working and he seemed a bit overmedicated. So we tried Vyvanse for about a month and it didn’t work well at all. He couldn’t focus at all in school and it was impossible to carry on a conversation with him. We went back to Concerta at a slightly lower dose. His doctor thinks that having been off it for a month sometimes ‘resets’ the brain and allows the medication to work again. He’s improved a lot but still a few challenges. I feel we’re running out of medication options (been through most of the others).

My son is 7 and has been on vyvanse for about 4 months and it has been the best one so far. I agree, none of them are perfect and my son has challenges no matter what medication he’s on. We’ve also tried Adderall, ritalin and concerta all of which he complained of stomach aches on a regular basis. He has decreased appetite on all of them so vyvanse is no different from the others for that but he usually makes up for it a little once it wears off.

Same here- far fewer complaints of stomachaches & my son usually eats a pretty good dinner plus substantial bedtime snack. Important that you try to get a lot of protein in your son for breakfast - that helps hold them longer!

My grandson, now 13, has tried Concerta and Adderal in the past.  He has been on MetadateCD for the past 3 to 4 years and has had best results with this.  Everyone would prefer a non-stimulant and perhaps that day will come.

My son has been on Vyvanse for 3 weeks and is having anger issues.  Anyone else having this issue?
He can’t sit still when prompted to sit and listen to a story and I don’t know what else to do.  The teacher said that these issues were not present before the medication.  Also she said he doesn’t smile and looks sad alot. HELP.

I have an 11 year old son currently taking Vyvanse 30mg.  We are going back to dr. end of month and will be trying to use something different.  This medicine has made a total personality change.  Very aggressive, and many times very angry.  Not the same laughing, joking child we had before.  It has helped with school, but I miss my normal child.  Has anyone else had these issues with Vyvanse and which meds are a better alternative.

My 11 year old son has been taking Vyvanse for about 10 months. We have been at 60mg for about the last 6 months I think. It seems to work well, he has no appetitie during the day so we have med free Sundays and holidays, which sometimes is very difficult but he asks for it, so he can eat ... so we do our best. There is diffinetely a difference when he’s off the meds….he is all over the place, trouble sitting still and does things that annoy, not on purpose he just can’t control the impluses.  We do have to give him 5mg of melatonin at bedtime on scholl night s so he can get to sleep. And there a few nights a month when he pulls all nighters because he can’t shut down and sleep but, he manages ok.
Hope that this helps a bit take care

Our son has been on Vyvanse (8 years old) for over a year and we struggle with weight and attitude on it. He won’t eat lunch at all, then gets grouchy and emotional in the afternoon.
Vyvanse has made a HUGE difference in his learning, so the doctor added an antihistamine to the Vyvanse. It’s called periactin and it causes hunger! We’re going to start it this weekend.
