Clonidine for ADHD Management

Has anyone used clonidine during the day for management of symptoms. My DD11 has tried concerta & intuniv with no luck due to side effects. She currently takes clonidine for sleep & her psychiatrist is thinking of utilizing the clonidine during the day as well.

Thank you.

Yes, my DD6 started Clonidine several weeks ago.  However, we had to take her off of this med b/c it was far too sedating for her.  B/c she was unable to swallow the pill form, she was using the extended release transdermal patch, which she had on 24/7.  We gave it a week and a half, but she was still so tired that we had to stop.  We are now working on teaching her how to swallow the pill, with zero success!  :(
My cousin uses Clonidine (pill form) for her DS8; he takes it during the day along with his Ritalin and Concerta; as well as at night to help with sleep.

My son takes guanfacine during the day. It’s supposedly similar to clonidine, but less sedating and not so strong.  Maybe you could ask about trying they before clonidine.

My son has been on it for awhile but not at a high enough dose to manage his impulsive and angry moods so we just went up, increased at night and had zero sedating effects so moved it to daytime to get some effects for the moods. The key according to my dr to limit sedating effects is to increase slowly.

We tried guanfacine SR & ER. Both caused her to not sleep. They are talking of trying a 1/2 pill .05 of clonidine in the am.
Thanks,
Holly

My son has been taking Kapvay (clonidine) for a couple of years, along with Adderall. He is now 15. At first, it made him super sleepy, esp. during the day. At some point, his body got used to it and it no longer has that effect. He takes one .05 mg at night and two of them in the a.m., along with his Adderall. Frankly, if he takes it and he doesn’t take his Adderall, I notice no difference in his behavior, no improvement with that alone.

My son (13) takes clonidine day and night with focalin xr. He takes a 1/4 pill of clonidine hcl .10mg and then takes a whole .10mg pill in the evening. We have found it helpful. For a long time he was on clonidine only because of stimulant side effects.

Clonidine’s greatest side effect is drowsiness.  My daughter takes it to fall asleep.  Why would anyone take it in the day?
Try Strattera and/or Intuniv.  They don’t work for everyone, but you don’t need stimulants if they do.

My 7 year old takes guanfacine as well.  We started with 1/4 of a 1mg tablet once a day at bedtime.  He was very sleepy the first few days but adjusted by about day 5.  We just now increased to a half a tablet because we didn’t see any changes in behavior once the sleepiness wore off.  Like a lot of ADHD kids, the hyperness and inability to focus actually gets worse when they are sleepy, so it’s important to address that side effect.
