Concerta Reviews
Concerta, tics and tinnitus
My 12 YO son was on 18mg Concerta for 6 mo with some improvement. If we stopped on weekend he developed tics so we stopped breaks. His dose went to 27 mg and great improvement at school and maturity. But suddenly he developed facial tics, crying jags, rash, and so doctor said to stop med and get his thyroid tested. Blood test was normal. We stopped Concerta cold turkey and tics reduced to none. But now he has tinnitus which I understand can come from being on a drug or coming off a drug. Very disappointing as I saw the benefits of the stimulant but for our son, the side affects cancel that out. I don’t want to do Strattera for him and not sure tenex or intuitive alone will work and/or aggregate the tinnitis. Anyone else having these problems/ dilemmas?

Has your son’s MD tried Clonidine (Brand name: Catapress)? It is an Alpha-Antagonist I believe that is typically used for high blood pressure and smoking cessation. I have read that used as an adjunct with stimulant medications for ADD/ADHD it works great to reduce & or eliminate troublesome side effects. I would research it and ask your MD. If you use your regular pediatrician he/she may not know about this.
I’m sorry that you’re having issues with your son’s meds. My first concern was that it sounds like you’re stopping and starting the medication without prior approval from your physician…..this can really start a whole new world of problems, unfortunately. I would definitely have a chat with your doctor, and maybe even pursue a local ADHD specialist that might be able to give you more insight.
No…his psychiatrist told us to stop.
Ps ..he is also seen at ADHD clinic at university medical center. Thyroid test was normal.
My son started on Concerta 2 years ago. He did very well with it and then it stopped working 6 months later. He had developed some tics from day 1. Then we switch to Vyvanse, but too expensive. We started Adderall, But my husband hated that our son was on a stimulant and did not like the side effects. Then we tried Intuit And our son spent his seventh birthday in the hospital. We could not wake him up and this was after taking it for only 3 days. We went back to the adderall because the benefits far exceeded the risk. His tics have varied from head snapping side to side, head snapping back repeatedly, to not being able to stretch his fingers enough. Even though the adderal help him calm down in school and at home, I knew something else was wrong. A lot of kids with adhd have underlying learning disabilities. I took him to the most awesome place to be thoroughly evaluated. He had 4 separate visits…2 with a psychologist and 2 with an education specialist. He was given the W.I.S.K. test and IQ among other things. the difference between this place and the other specialists/neurologists that we have seen is they interviewed us (parents) first without our son. Even though my insurance was not accepted, I used my fsa to pay the 2000 dollar bill and I will never regret that. He also has developmental dyslexia and THAT was the key we were missing!. The also explained the fine motor skills problems he is having. Now were battling with the school to get the right curriculum. I have a list of all the tests he had taken so if you need them please let me know. I know that is the way he should have been tested in the first place. These specialists were a Godsend! Good luck! PS…Medications are different for each child. Sometimes they react well and at other times they don’t. You just have to find the right doctor that’s truly knows what they’re talking about. Also get the add workbook it’s awesome! My son gets money or privileges every time he completes 1 of the tasks.
Thanks for the feedback. However, we have already gone thru all that over 4 years ago. Our son was evaluated at MIND in Sacramento which is part of UCDavis and is a specialized clinic for kids with neurological disorders. He has 3 disabilities in addition to ADHD. He has had 504 for 4 years. He is seen by psychiatrist at MIND thru ADHD clinic. My specific question here was about Concerta, tics, and tinnitus. No, I don’t do things without checking with his doctor. For now he is off Meds and I think we’ll keep it that way for now. I was considering Intuiniv but don’t like the idea of messing with our son’s BP. Also, don’t want to see him with tics so tired of the stimulants. My concern with Strattera is the liver. As I told my husband - we only have one and if it goes - you have a problem. Anyway - I wish he could tolerate Stimson but it doesn’t seem like he can
