Just Diagnosed With ADHD (Children)
Concerned Mommy
Hi, my name is Jessica my son is 7 and just diagnosed with ADHD hyperactive/impulsive type. He was started on Ritalin LA 20mg in the am one week ago. It is working great for him however he is now very emotionally sensitive and cries very easily. He is being called a crybaby at football due to that is were it occurs most often. He gets frustrated and cries. Also having great difficulty falling and staying asleep. Any opinions? Will these symptoms fad or is his dose to high or maybe needs a different med? Thanks.

I am using a very low dose of melatonin (something our bodies naturally produce in the evening to help the body sleep) You can get it anywhere, walmart has it for around four bucks. If the crying happens in the evening,it could just be the “crash” coming down off the meds.My son went through that and it wore off eventually.Just talk him through it if you can! I know it’s hard poor guy :(...
Hi Jessica,
I’m so sorry your son (and you as Mom) are having a tough time right now. Some side-effects wear off after a week or so, but that’s something to talk to his Dr. and/or pharmacist about. If you haven’t already, keep in close contact with the Dr.‘s office about any side-effects and follow their advice.
Some meds wear off differently in different people than others do. That evening effect when the med wears off too abruptly is often referred to as “rebound” effect. My son, for example, got extremely emotional and miserably unhappy in the evenings with ADDerall XR, but I did fine with it myself.
I hope he does better soon!
Hang in there!

my son is 7 and has been on addreall xr 5—->15mg for about 2 years now. I do notice that when he is coming down from it after about 7-8hours, he does get emptional sometimes.. depressed sounding, “no one likes me” “you hate me” “nobody plays with me” etc.
im getting a new doctor to see what else i can do besides medicate my kid…..sounds like diet will be a game changer…..organic, no dyes, no added sugars, and supplements.
Medical treatment has always side effects. My son has never received medical treatment, he was treated telepathically in 5 years altder and he was a very balances children. I have never tried to contact the public service because they can not heal anyone. Let us know if you’re open to alternative therapies. It is very difficult for me to see how people slitter while I was so lucky, so I try to tell whether a shot.
