Focalin XR
Can anyone tell me if your child has been experiencing any side effects from focalin xr? If yes, what were they,and did they go away at all?
My son is on 40mg and is 8 yrs old. We have tried a lot of other meds and this one by far seemed to be the best by far expect now he’s experiened Tics.
My gut feeling its caused by the medicine.

My son is almost 8 and takes 20mg of Focalin XR and we also just started some Intuniv as well. When we first started the medication he suffered from headaches and stomachaches which both subsided over time. He has had continued trouble with sleeping since starting it, but it’s not every day or as bad as it initially was. We’ve never seen tics. My only thought is that 40mg is a huge dose for an 8year old based on the information I’ve been given….though what I’ve heard seems to vary. Our pediatrician has told me 30mg is the max dose for this age range and my friend’s child’s psychiatrist has told her 20mg is the max. Since we are doing reasonably well on the 20mg I haven’t researched it myself yet. I’d be asking about Tourette ‘s though if I saw tics in my child. I have heard that stimulants can bring them on. Good luck. I hope maybe a decreased dose will make them stop for your child!
I agree with JS on the dosage. My 12-year-old son is on 10mg of this medication, and it’s also worked well. Some headaches in the beginning and some mood swings but, for the most part, it’s been going very well. Maybe try a lower dosage and see if the tics stop.

When we decreased his dose tics were still there and his behavior became out of control. We just started Tenex 3 days ago so we will see if it helps at all. Any other ideas??? Has your child ever been on any other adhd medication before the focalin?
