ADHD in Women

Help, the natural way

Hi Ladies!

I’m new to ADDConnect and I’m so thrilled to have found a support group for women with ADHD. I’ve been on a hunt for help and want to try to deal with the symptoms without meds. I’m currently on 30 mg of Vyvanse and it’s not working too well for me. I tried going up to 40 mg but it increased my anxiety too much so the doc decreased it. Now, I have all the side-effects of the drug but none of its benefits. Sigh.. I’m also on the anti-depressant Cymbalta (60 mg) and I take a variety of vitamins and supplements.  Any suggestions?

I do realize that your question was RE: “natural” alternatives, but since the “natural” alternatives are so much less effective than the “un-natural” ones I feel much more led to comment on what I noticed could be the problem—your current drug combination that includes two drugs that have a known interaction.  Cymbalta is a moderate inhibitor of the CYP 450 2D6 enzyme so that could be why you experienced an increase in anxiety at the higher dose of Vyvanse.  It could also be why you generally describe things as experiencing only the side-effects of the Vyvanse (& none of the “good stuff”).

I noted in your profile that you’re not sure if depression & anxiety are purely secondary to untreated ADHD…& since that is so often the case, that makes me think that perhaps you are right about that, and if so, the Cymbalta is completely unnecessary.

I would strongly encourage you to talk with your doctor about eliminating the Cymbalta altogether or at least changing it to any one of the other antidepressants that has no effect on the 2D6 enzyme which is necessary for proper elimination & clearance of amphetamines.  2D6 inhibition by the Cymbalta leads to an increase in the level of amphetamines in your bloodstream compared to what it would be if you were taking only the amphetamine (Vyvanse).

Hi gods_child!

There was a robust discussion about natural alternatives in another group this week. You will find lots of suggests on that route here:

Also, has a large section of articles on Diet & Nutrition for ADHD:
