How do I get diagnosed and by whom?? MD, PhD??

How do I go about getting diagnosed for ADD? Who do I go to for the diagnoses? I see a OD now for medical problems and he’s not a MD but a OD. He can write RX but he’s very conservative about RX, he won’t give me any meds for anxiety only anti-depressants and I know if I tell him I think I’m ADD, he’ll laugh at me. SO who do I see for a real diagnoses?

Here is a suggestion from Mayo Clinic’s website:

I would add that you need to find another doctor that will talk to you and listen to you. Your doctor does not have to agree with you but I would hope that your doctor would listen to you with an open mind.

If you see your osteopath and want to discuss treatments, you may want to bring this article with you.

I got diagnosed by a child psychiatrist . I think they have had more schooling in this area.

Hi Pink,

I was diagnosed by my MD.  He had been treating me for a year for depression with antidepressants with little improvement.  I actually went online and took 3 questionnaires on ADHD and diagnosed myself smile

I brought them to my doctor and I told him this is what has been plaguing me for 49 years please give me medication.  He whipped out his pad and prescribed Ritalin.  That was 21 months ago and my life has forever been changed for the good.  I will always be grateful he recognized and/or agreed with my diagnosis.

Good luck to you!

I have no idea what an OD is…  I see a DO, Doctor of Osteopathy.
When I got my diagnosis for ADD I went to a psychiatrist.  I did that because if I needed medications I wanted someone prescribing for me that knew his/her way around the medications specific to ADD/ADHD.
I did some checking with CHADD and other sources to find one well versed in ADD/ADHD.
Hope that helps!
