How do you know if you are on the correct med?

Hello all….I was recently diagnosed with ADHD.  I am a woman (43) with a full-time, high-pressure job (10 years at same place).  My doctor started me off with Ritalin.  5mg for the first few days and then if no side effects, move on to another 5mg at lunch time.  I honestly feel really great. I am shocked at the difference in my thought processing, focus.  I’m much less annoyed and irritated at everyone and everything and and have finally learned to shut the hell up for a few minutes. I actually went through a phase of semi-depression…“where has this been all my life?!”

I know there are many different types of meds available and this clearly feels like it is working on a lot of levels…but how do you know it is the “right” one?  Or the “wrong” one?  Do you go by side-effects?

Thanks!

Hi major!

It sounds to me like you are definitely seeing benefits from the medication. That is a very positive sign. Now it’s time to work with your doctor to adjust the dosage, time taken, etc to fine tune treatment for optimal benefit (http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/905.html).
