How to find a good Psychologist (Atlanta Area)

I was diagnosed with ADD in January. I’ve been taking medication (20mg Adderall XR) and have felt a little more calm in my emotions. However, I feel it is time for my to find a psychologist to address my emotion health. In particular, I had considered a CBT since I feel this may be incredibly beneficial.

Does anyone have advice on how to narrow down the many many options available? I’m in the Atlanta area and there seem to be plenty of choices. I’m currently on a HSA so until I can switch my insurance, I’m on a fairly restrictive budget. I say this as I want to try and find a way to identify good choices instead of having to go to several facilities.

Any advice is welcome. I have long wanted to go to therapy so I feel overwhelmed and fear I will find a psychologist who does more damage than good. I do want to share that I am part ofthe LGBTQ community so I prefer a doctor who is accepting.

It’s wise of you to select carefully. Arrogant or incompetent helpers do more harm than good. Just this week I am trying to reduce the damage being caused by a psychologist who thinks it’s ok to cause a sad and lonely young man more hurt so he can become more deeply depressed and therefore a good candidate for therapy around depression. I advised the parents that this is harmful garbage. One parent agrees while the other does not simply because it serves his separation/ custody battle agenda.

Check Psychology Today therapists; interview them. and when logic is exhausted, use your intuition.

Personal or professional references would be ideal. If you have friends who can recommend someone, or your general practitioner, that would probably be ideal. There are some listed in the ADDitude Directory here:,+Georgia,+United+States&keyword;=.
