ADHD at Work

Inattentive accomodations at work?

Long story but i work in an industry where being a few minutes late is a big deal (not necessarily to my personal position and ability to get my work done, but in the culture of the organization - so everyone must be held to the same rules). My position is coordinating a program, meeting with people, managing the day-to-day in the office, etc.

After a lot of consultation, discussion, etc., I am documenting my ADD - Inattentive Type at work.

Has anyone else done this and if so, what type of accomodations are typical? I am PT at 30 hrs so I do come in later most days but still not making it many days. (I’m not 30 min late, but often 10-15)...
Other ideas?

I have a very supportive boss & EAP but need to find some ideas as it is not something they see everyday. I have ADD Inattentive NOT hyperactive.

Also talking with my psychiatry NP on Saturday to discuss and she asked if I could come with some suggestions that might be useful for my workplace.

What time do most people get there?

only have experience with getting fired after couple months for no real reason at all!!! your post makes me smile since rest of us only get to talk about not working. don’t want to give them valid reason to terminate me so hardly ever a min late. very jealous!!

The first and foremost, accommodations start with career choices. I have been many things, but about one year ago I started working ‘part time’ in a retail store because I used to sit down for my translation work all day, the sit down for many other things, etc. I used to pay for the gym and not go.

I thought even if a job as a retail salesperson doesn’t pay much, it is better than paying for a gym where I don’t go. That job keeps me on my feet and doing very necessary physical activity. Besides, as a freelancer, sometimes there is almost no work, so this part time keeps my income more stable.

That was a great choice because in here, beside my physical activity, I can do machine embroidery, some crafts, and other creative activities that I suppressed because I could never have the time, space, and priorities that were in line with my crafty side.

When it comes to punctuality, I usually get to work on time or even earlier, even if it is 30 minutes before. However, sometimes I mix things up and I end up showing at the wrong place or time or missing my shift until someone calls to point out that I should be there and I am not. This has costed the business some fines and of course it also gets the business into trouble with the administration of the mall.
The owner of the store values my other talents, but when the business opens late or fails to open, it is always because of me. Nobody else makes this type of mistake.

I don’t know how it happens. For example, I read my calendar in the morning so I know what time I have to show up, but then after I get the call telling me I was supposed to be there at X time or security calls because it is almost noon and the store has not opened, I realize that I didn’t read the correct day.
Other times, I am so sure and confident that I know when I have to show up, that I don’t even look at the schedule.
Other times I am so proud that I am getting to work on time only to realize that I am not at the right location. By the time I get to the place where I am supposed to work, it is late.

This incidents don’t happen every day or every week, even every month, but I have not been able to foresee when it is going to happen or the way things go wrong until it is too late. Even if the owner is nice with me, it is a personal challenge and a debt of honor that I must not fail to show up at the right place at the right time!

Any suggestions for catching myself when I am getting it wrong? I have my alarm but I no longer hear it. I set up iftt reminder calls to remind me to get ready for work two hours before I have to go out so that I can wrap up whatever I am doing and get out on time. I use google calendar wit reminders. It ‘highlights’ the current day, so I shouldn’t be reading the wrong day, but it still happens.

That was ‘with reminders’, not ‘wit reminders’, my apologies for the typo.
