Introductions and time management trouble?

Hi, I’m Miranda and I’m a freshman in college. I’ve been struggling with my ADD and adjusting to college and was hoping I could make some friends here who know what I"m going through and who maybe I can swap some tips with!

I’ve had ADD since 5-6 grade, and been on different meds for it most of the time. But after the transition to college the meds that had been helping stopped and I have yet to find another medication that I feel comfortable on and the side effects suck! I havent been on anything for it in about a month or so and I’m starting to get behind in my schoolwork. I do have accommodations, but I think my biggest issue is time management…anyone have any tips?

I am a computer geek so I like a smart phone with a good pim application that I sync to my computer. 

You have to be very anal about keeping these things up to date and consulting them when you make appointments and what not.

If you don’t feel you can do the anal part then you would be best to look for some other tools or system.

In college there are lots of distractions and lots of clutter everywhere. Having a very good place to study is vital.
If you can do it it’s wise to have Facebook, email and texting devices on another machine in a different place from the study place. I used to find it helpful to create a ‘study carrel’ kind of work desk.

Hi! My name is James, and I’m a sophomore at my college. Let me tell you, you are far from the only person having these sorts of troubles. I am most definitely struggling with my ADHD, but I think I have a few tips that could be useful.

First, if there’s something you can do that you need to do, that would take about 2 minutes or less to do it, do it immediately.

Second, try setting aside a specific time every night to study your subjects. Additionally, check your class websites if you have them on a daily basis; it’s really useful for staying on top of your assignments.

Third, I’m not sure what sort of college you go to (i.e., small liberal arts college or state university) but you should check the offices available at your school to see if there are any “Academic Achievement” offices or anything of the sort. If there are, get in contact with one of the administrators; they might have programs in place to help you succeed.

Fourth (sorry for the novel), don’t forget that college is your training grounds for real life. It’s okay to make mistakes, as long as you’re able to take lessons from them!

Hi Miranda,

Sorry to hear that you are struggling. It’s unfortunately an all to common occurance. College is difficult and finding your own systems that work according to your learning style is essential. I had similar struggles when I first started college and managed to eventually find some strategies that work really well.

To answer the medication question. Often times it’s not that it’s necessarily type of medication that’s the issue (although it could very well be and you would need to speak with your prescribing physician to be sure since I’m not a doctor) since there are a lot of factors to consider. Typically though, as you age the medication can become less effective at it’s current dose. It may be as simple as increasing the dose (with your Dr.‘s guidance) moderately until you regain the benefits you were experiencing before. The fact that you were benefits makes me think that at some point it was helpful and that’s why I’m thinking the dosage might be the issue. That is to say, as long as you are not experiencing any significant negative side effects that are impairing your daily functioning.
