My son was just diagnosed with adhd and he is taking Ritalin for it I am not sure were what to expect his father who does not live with us told me he has adhd and add witch I just learned about when I told him our son has it. I have been told by friends that i should expect him to have mood swings once the pills are in his system and that is cocaine?!? I am not even sure if he has adhd he has been in school for 3 years and he can finally wright his name good the doctor had me and his teachers fill out paper work when I was told at his parent teacher conference that he was having a lot of problems focusing and had to be reminded all the time what he was doing. I am just wanting to know what kind of reaction I could expect with him on Ritalin.

Hi ConnorsMom!

There’s a great article over on ADDitudeMag.com called ADHD Medication101, that will help you with treating your son’s ADHD. http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/718.html

Please, please, please, don’t listen to “well-intentioned” friends or family.  They are not the ones living with a child with ADHD.  These meds are NOT cocaine!  Ritalin may or may not be the medicine your child is on for a long time.  You will most likely go through several changes on meds until you find the right one and the right dose.

As stated by adhdmomma, read the articles she sent and anything and everything you can get your hands on.  Become educated so you can do best by your child.

Good for you for asking questions!  That’s half the battle when dealing with an ADHD diagnosis.

Ritalin is NOT cocaine and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.  My son has been on long acting Ritalin (called Concerta) for several years and it has been a life saver for him (and us).  He concentrates more, is less frustrated and therefore less angry. School marks have improved and so has his friendships.

I would recommend you read as much as you can about ADHD. This website is great, along with many books you can get from your local library.  I also like the YouTube video by Dr. Russel Barkely titled “Essential Ideas for Parents”.

Good luck!
