Looking for ADD summer program, willing to travel
I have a 7-year-old son, who has been diagnosed with ADD/primarily inattentive type, with some symptoms of hyperactivity, but not much aggression. His doctor told me that he should be attending a group to help him address some of the social issues faced by kids with ADD. I was told that the clinic, which is over 200 miles from my house has a two-week summer training program. We had planned to go up to the clinic and stay in hotel for two weeks while my son attended. But, now I have been told that the program is not in the summer, but in the late spring instead.
I don’t feel comfortable taking my son out of school for two weeks no matter how helpful the training may be. School gives him stability and helps him master basic skills. There is nothing available locally.
We are willing to travel and stay if need be so that my son can get this type of training. Does anyone know of a program somewhere in the U.S. that offers summer sessions? We have family in Detroit/Ann Arbor, San Antonio, San Francisco, Seattle and Boston. So, those would be the best places to go so we could stay with relatives while he attends. However, I am willing to go wherever the training may be so long as I don’t have to pull my son out of school to get it.
I am working right now to save up the money to pay for expenses while we attend.
Any suggestions?

Hi Sue - we have some ADHD summer program recommendations at ADDitudemag.com that might be what you are looking for. I agree that disrupting your son’s school schedule is less than ideal.
This seems like an excellent idea, to give a child a program like this, as long as the child’s self esteem is not affected. I never thought anything was wrong with me until my parents started telling me about it, ADD, etc. You have to tread very carefully in this matter, but as said, it is a great idea I think if handled carefully.
