Sleep Issues and ADHD

Medication Trazadone/insomnia

Hi, I’m a 46 year old mom who has been struggling with depression and anxiety for years. I’m about to start Adderall because I have ADHD symptoms too. My 10 year old has ADHD. I order for me to sleep at night I have to take Trazadone, 50 mg. I ran out of my prescription two days ago and my doctor was unable to authorize due to the holiday. I was up all night Sunday night. Last night I took a generic Ambien and it didn’t work all night. Night time sleep aids and Melatonin doesn’t work at all. Does anyway have this problem and gas grown dependant on Trazadone? A few months ago I tried not taking any medications at all, and I didn’t sleep for 3 to 4 days. Sometimes I wonder if it’s something else. - See more at:

No worries for getting addicted to Trazadone.  It’s not your usual “sleep medication”. It was originally for depression.  It’s an antidepressant. A selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor.

I took it for a number of years at 50mg, and then at some point was able to cut it down to 25mg, which made me less groggy in the mornings.

I had been on triazadone as well for 2 years and was worried about getting off before i got pregnant.
Let me give you a (I’ll try) short run down of me. My mom had 4 children, i was the one that never slept and #4.
I have always had a hard time going to sleep staying asleep.
I was on sleeping meds in high school.
And took benadryl while pregnant and after with my first. I was so vety tired but still had a very hard time sleeping even though my son woke up every hr an half for 3 yrs.

As i said i was on trizadond (sp). I had tried many other sleep aidz too. I prepared (mentally) my self for the lack of sleep when we decided we were going to have another child. To my suprise i sleep quite well beford during and after even though my pregnancy and child are much the same.
I am older but other factors i thought would make it worse have not. Such as not working. I thought i wont have work to make me tired,.But i am tired.and i do usually fall asleep quickly. 15-20min.
This is what i do because i do bed time routine with my children this helps me too and i have to stick to it.
We start with a dimly lit bath or shower and read for 30-45min in a dim room the room has darkening curtains and we have white noise playing constantly in our bed rooms i think this helps block out all the stimulus our ADHD brains hear. (Damn you ticking clock, barking dogs car doors). Oh and probably the most important thing going to bed and waking up at the same time everyday. If you use your cell phone to read, android has a program to take the blue tone out of the scren and dim it called twilight.
I also drink more water than ever before.
I use my balls to the wall, all or nothing ADHD trait to keep me going on the routine.
Dont get me wrong, i still wake up once a week and, cant go back to sleep for a few hrs. But this is the best sleep ive ever had!
The stimulants i have tried as an adult made my anxiety out of control. So i dont take them.
