Depression and ADHD

Need help or advice

Hello my name is Joseph Chonka. I searched google to see if there were any sites for ADHD and found this one. I was torn apart by bullies all throughout school because of my erratic behavior due to ADHD. The hyperactivity part has since subsided but now I am left with just a hollow shelf of my former self and have no confidence or hope anymore. I feel like I am in a whole too deep to climb out of. I struggle everyday to make myself put out a job application because I’m afraid of being hurt. Can anyone tell me what to do or how to climb out of this hole please.

Hi jjcho!

I’m so sorry that you are struggling. You are looking for help though, so you’ve already started digging out of the hole.

Your next step is to talk to your doctor. If you have a therapist of psych you can meet with, that’s ideal. Be very honest with them about the hopelessness you feel. Tell them you need their help devising a step-by-step plan to climb out of the hole and you need them to hold you accountable every step of the way.

Once you have a handle on the depression, consider hiring an ADHD coach (http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/4002.html). They will help you with goals (like submitting job applications and going on interviews: http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/9647.html) and give you the strategies and support you need to get started, and hold you accountable for continuing your forward trajectory.

I think it’s important to decipher what type of job would be a good fit for you and be fulfilling for you, and pursue that (http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/1497.html). It sounds like you’ve had some rough employment experiences, which is typical for individuals with ADHD who are in jobs that bring out their weaknesses, rather than their strengths.

I wish you the best of luck!

John, it is never easy to deal with life when you are not in a frame of mind to do so.  Your anger and frustration is understandable

Depression often accompanies ADD/ADHD.  It s quite possible that the depression is what is really affecting you right now.  So, that means that you need help with the depression.

I live with ADD and Depression and have all of my life.  Your frustration leads to anger and that does nothing more than feed the depression.  At this point, you may need medication for the depression.

Nobody likes having to deal with this stuff, but, if you want a life that is better than what you have now, then you have to seek answers and assistance.

Here is something to think about.  Most communities have low-cost or no-cost mental health centers.  They are usually connected to the county health services agency.  Since you have no current earnings, you should be eligible.  Since you have health coverage through your parents’ insurance, they should accept what the insurance plan pays and that will leave you with little or no balance to pay yourself.

The anger is understandable.  Taking that anger out on others is not.  Work toward getting what you need, but do not burn all of the bridges because you may need to use them again.

Hoping that all works out well for you!  Keep us posted!
