ADHD in Virginia

I am new to this forum, and I am so glad I found a group in Virginia. I am single parent of a six year old boy who was diagnosed with ADHD this fall. He also has a speech and language impairment. He is not currently on any medications nor does he see a therapist regularly. His behavior since school ended is gotten very aggressive and he recently was asked to leave camp even though he had an inclusion coach. He on several occasions ran from the counselors and hit and yelled at them. I am not sure what medications to try it was recommended he try clonidine but I am not sure? Has anyone had any success with this medication I know it is used to slow him down. Also had anyone been told there child was to young for psychotherapy?

Hi, I’m a single parent too, with two ADHD boys, 7 and 9.  It is definitely a good idea to get something going before school starts again.  This stuff will take time to get sorted out.

Call your pediatrician and get an appt to discuss meds and behavior therapy referrals.  This will be a good place to start.

It doesn’t have to be this bad, and it is a lot of time and work to get on track.  You can do it!  Good luck, and don’t give up!

Hi redrubby!

It’s so hard to accept that our child may need daily medication. My husband and I struggled with the decision immensely. But my son was finally able to find some happiness and success once we found an effective medication regimen.

These articles provide an overview on ADHD medication (mentions Clonidine as well) and will help you learn more about the medications, how they work, and how to successfully find the right one:

Behavior therapy will help immensely as well (

Keep advocating!
