Online classes in middle school

School can be challenging for my ADD daughter.  She gets decent grades, overall.  She is intelligent.  She is motivated.  Of course, she’s also inattentive and disorganized.  So instead of being an A student, she gets A’s and B’s and C’s.  The lower grades are almost always due to losing homework that she has already completed.  But it gets lost and not turned in.

So she tried an online class.  She LOVES it.  She loves the format.  It works GREAT for her ADD approach to life.  No papers to lose.  No forms to take home to get signed and brought back and if you don’t, you lose 10% of your homework grade.  None of that silly busy-work that knocks points off each week.

Have any of you experienced this?  Does it work better for your ADD child?  My kid loves it.

She could do academics online and electives at school, so she keeps friends there.  Even if she is a full time online student, she can also take part in after school activities at her local middle school.  I’d say do what works and see what happens.  In the high school I work in, they are big into the students working in groups and learning from and with each other.  So if she has some experience doing that, she should be OK heading into some of those kind of classes in future years.

Thanks whizinc.  That is worth considering.  I was seeking feedback from our community of parents of gifted ADD students to see how common this is.  How many of us have tried the online approach and has it proven itself to be a good way of working for ADDers in general.

I’m thinking of this as maybe another ADD accomodation.  Like something considered for an IEP or 504 plan.  How prevalent is this as an option for our kids?

Are you saying she attends regular Middle School, but ALSO takes classes online?

Yes.
