Prozac for 9 year old?

Hello.  My son is 9 years old and has ADD with severe anxiety.  He has been on Daytrana and Zoloft for about 4 years.  In the last month his behavior has changed and he has become irritable, negative and having trouble at school.  Yesterday his doctor switched him from Zoloft to Prozac.  We are supposed to start it on Monday.  Does anyone have any experience with this medicine with children?  I would appreciate any advice/info.  Thanks.

I just read this last night. I have been taking both and will speak with my doctor ASAP

Prozac = fluoxetine   Zoloft=Sertraline Daytrana=Methylphenidate

Check with your doctor and send him the articles. This Doctor Parker trains other doctors. Of course use your judgement, he is selling a book: https://store.corepsych.com/ADHD-Medication-Rules-The-Meds-For-Paying-Attention-160-pages-eBook—by-Dr-Charles-Parker_p_697.html#

He seems very knowledgeable to me after watching his videos. I’m not a doctor so don’t trust me just ask more questions.

Good Luck

I’ve been on Prozac for years and love it. I remember reading though, that you’re not supposed to mix it with a stimulant?  I’m not a doctor though and I don’t play one on tv…

My 13 year old is on Fluoxitine and it works well for him.  He was diagnosed with ADHD and anxiety and he was depressed.  The Fluoxtine helped him.  He is much happier and feels better about himself.  He can cope better with daily challenges such as homework and peer pressure issues.

We had no luck with Prozac.  Dr. switched my son to it after he maxed out his dosage of Zoloft (which we absolutely loved!)

We also had no luck with Daytrana - it actually made him a little aggressive.  Don’t discount that problem may actually be the Daytrana - not the Zoloft.  I’ve read that irritability and aggressiveness are 2 of the biggest side effects of Daytrana.  But that patch is so darn convenient - wish every kind of ADHD medication came like that so I could give it to him without have to wake him up in the mornings!

We actually had great improvement in his anxiety and irritability when our neurologist took him off of all the anti-depressants and switched him to risperadol.  It’s a little bit scary to read about it, but it has worked tremendously for us and he is a much happier kid with it.

Good luck!

My 9 year old daughter had a lot of anxiety also so our psychologist prescribed Prozac.  She was already on Daytrana but the addition of the Prozac was wonderful.  She became a new person, more confident, more outgoing etc.  The only thing you have to watch for is that if you get too much Prozac, it cancels out the effects of the Daytrana.  Then she does not pay attention or focus enough.  So we sat her down and told her that she needs to make sure she is paying attention in school.  The meds only do so much, she still has to learn to control herself.  The pills are not magic…so she now makes more of an effort to pay attention in school and the 2 medicines are working wonders every day.  She would not be where she is today without the medicines, she can’t do it on her own.

My 9 year old son has been on Prozac since he was 5 years old.  It has kept him from being on a roller coaster all day, and believe me I know when he has not had his meds.  If you are still concerned just watch his behavior and you will be surprised.
