Question if anyone is in college

Hello my name is Amy, I am currently an adult with ADD/ADHD who is attending online college and has needed to ask for an accommodation due to my ADD.  I was supposed to hear back from them by now due to I have already given all supporting documentation to the school however, I was wondering if there were any accommodations that would even be able to help since I go to school at home and do it online.  I am getting the feeling that they will not have anything as far as an accommodation for me so was wondering if anyone might have any ideas for me to reply back with when they do get back to me with their final answer.  I’m seriously concerned however will not just give up and quit either.  This is really important for me and they know this but I am struggling so much with what I have right now that I am afraid that I will lose my school funding as well due to my low grades as of right now.  If someone has any advice please respond to this I will appreciate any input from anyone right now.

Thank You

I’m a bit confused.  Did you just ask them something like “What kind of accommodations can I get?”  Unless I’m mistaken (and I very well could be) you need to know what things about the current system are not working for you (and why) so that you can then request certain specific things which will help you out.

Maybe if I/we had more of an idea what you emailed them it would be easier to know if their lack of response “means” something.  Maybe I’m just tired & not thinking clearly (& in the morning I’ll have a more coherent reply).  wink

Hi Amy,
When we work with colleges on accommodations they are often such things as more time to complete exams, a quiet room to write tests, provision of coaching, counselling, note-taking, tutoring etc. Those like the first two would not apply since you are on line. If you are in Canada and are receiving Canada Student Loans based support the other supports may apply.
This would be quite simple if you have had a psycho-educational assessment where the psychologist had given some indication of the kinds of accomodations you would need to level the bar.
If you are not in Canada and you do not have a recent assessment then you will, as BC suggests, need to tell us what you are having trouble with.
And, there is no need to worry because if you can identify the problem, there will be good solutions here.

Hi Amy,

I finished college at the end of 2011 and will probably return. I like college much better than the “real” world. In the last round, I took both online and in-person classes. The online classes were far easier for me. I could control background noise and distractions, do the work whenever I remembered, and contact the instructor at my convenience. About the only accommodation I could have used was reminder calls for online class meetings. I managed without those by “double coverage” (or more than double) with audible alarms and a large paper calendar. What accommodations did you request?

Hi Amy, I first found out that I had ADD on my fifth and final attempt at full time college, and I washed out every time. In desperation I went to the schools counselor and told her my story and she said, I think you have ADHD. so to make a long story short I was tested and the results were that I had ADD without the hyperactivity, at that time they just called it ADD.
one accommodation that pertained to me was the type of tests I was given made a difference in how well my end grade was. I have never been able to be good at taking long answer or written answer questions, I almost always would leave most of a test like that blank. I took a class from an instructor who only gave written answer question tests. The class was in beef cattle production, and one of the questions was name the compartments of a bovine stomach and their purposes. I was able to get a couple answers but for the most part I left the answers to a question I new blank. If the question would have been multiple choice or matching I would have nailed that class.
He was unwilling to make accommodations for me and I ended up with a c-. that was the last class I took.
What I am trying to say is that ,that is one accommodation that could be adapted to an online class. That was a lot of words for little help. Do not give up-keep the hope and God bless you.
