Quillivant XR

My 8 year old son has been on Focalin XR for a year and a half with little side effects.  Recently he developed a huge problem with insomnia.  The doctor wants to switch him to Quillivant XR.  Has anyone had any success with this medication?  When I got it filled the pharmacist said he’s filled it before but no one has come back for a refill which makes me nervous.  My son hasn’t started the Quillivant yet but we need to do something.  He can’t sleep at night when he takes Focalin and he’s suffering in school with no medication.  I would really appreciate any advice!

My 8yr old son has been taking Quillivant XR for about 10 months with fantastic results!

It was FDA approved in January.  My son was also taking Focalin XR before Q.  It actually worked well, but my son can’t swallow pills so I had to open it up and put it on chocolate syrup.  It was always a battle.  Also, he lost alot of weight on Focalin.

The Q is sweetened and sort of banana/tropical fruit flavored.  He will take it right out of the syringe.  He also takes a dose after lunch at school.  His appetite is much better and he has put on 14 lbs since taking Q.

No sleeping problems. It is expensive, the company has discount cards for $100 of a scrip.  Just google it.

Definitely try it.  Our pharmacy said we were the first ones but now they have others.  We also had tried patches—big thumbs down.  Too long to work and major skin irritation.

Good luck!

Thanks!  Glad to hear it worked out so well, that sounds very promising!

My son is 4 and I’m just waiting till his insurance authorizes it. Also he will starts with 25mg/5ml in the mornings before school. I hope this works because it’s suppose to last for about 12 hours. I’m waiting to see the results to see if I need to add the intuniv 2mg at night because that helped with his impulsive behavior…But I’m going to wait to see these results. How long does it take to see some results?

So glad you posted this because I just heard about this on Tuesday. I requested a longer lasting one for the after care.

You will have immediate results.  Each morning it takes about half an hour to kick in.  But I give it shortly after he gets up while he is eating breakfast.  Again, his appetite is much better.

He now takes another 5ml at lunchtime to get through the afternoon.  XR has never lasted 9-12 hours as advertised.  He usually gets 7-8 hours max.  This was with Focalin too.

Remember, it can take awhile to get dosage and timing figured out.  Don’t give up!

Does it help with the impulsivity? And I’m thinking it might last four 12 if he’s 4 years old…what do you think

There is a lengthy conversation about Quillivant in the medication and treatment reviews forum here: http://connect.additudemag.com/forums/viewthread/568/.
You will read this in that thread, but my son is doing fantastic on Quillivant! He started meds 5 years ago and had issues with all of them. Concerta worked pretty well for a couple years with Amantadine added, but he developed some intense fear episodes and we needed to switch. Quillivant was the only stimulant we hadn’t tried, so I opted for that. He still needs to take the Amantadine with it (somehow that medication keeps him from developing a tolerance to stimulants), but he is doing phenomenal on it. Best he’s ever done at school and at home. I know some of it is maturity and growing self-awareness, but everything took a dramatic positive shift when he started Quillivant. He’s eating better and gaining instead of loosing now too.

I would give it a try. You don’t know if it’s right for your child until you try it.

Thanks for the advice!  I’m glad to hear there are positive experiences with Quillivant.  We’re going to start him on it tomorrow.  I hope it works as well for us!
