Concerta Reviews
Should be better not worse, right?
My 8year old son just started on Concerta 18mg three weeks ago and we was some improvement with his attitude and behavior. He has ADHD and ODD. He was still very active and talking non-stop so we changed to 27mg. Now his behavior and disposition at home is like before we started on the medicine, he has been on the 27mg for seven days. His teacher can not see a change in him between the two doses and a slight improvement from not being on medicine. This is the first medicine he has been on.
Is this normal? Should I increase it to 36mg?
Any advice would be helpful

Don’t increase anything without talking to your physician FIRST. Please.
I would also check out this resource on Concerta:
Concerta : Frequently Asked Questions About ADHD Medications.: A single dose of Concerta is designed to last for 12 hours, eliminating the need for students to take ADHD medications during the school day.Three weeks is a very short time to measure any kind of improvement.
Did you try anything else before you medicated your child with a stimulate that has been dubbed “kiddie-cocaine” (http://www.adhdhelp.org/concerta.htm)? There are soo many alternate theapies to be considered, here are a few good places to start. TACA, Danasview, Dr. Devin Houston. We have to do our homework, parents.
I have done my homework and am trying to learn as much as I can to do the best for my child. I would never change his medicine with out talking to his doctor.
The doctor said to follow up with her in 2 weeks to adjust the dose and that is what I was doing.
I was just looking for imput to see if others had the same thing happen.
You may want to ask the doctor about other ADHD medications. I have ADHD and take Concerta (36 mgs.). My six year old son also has ADHD, but Concerta did not work for him. The 18 mgs. was too much of a dosage for too long of a time. We switched my son to 15 mgs. of Ritalin LA. That formulation of Ritalin was correct for him. Of course this was done under doctor’s supervision.
My point is that the response to ADHD medication can be very individual.
Hope this helps.

We are currently in the same boat with my 8 year old son. My son was on 18mg for the first month and things were great. Then his behaviors creeped back (incessant chatter & sensitivity/outbursts). We upped him to 27mg It’s so hard to know if it’s because his dosage is still too low or if it’s not the right med for him. Especially since the first month was so great and I do have a call into his doctor.
I would love to hear how things are going now, since you wrote this post almost a week ago. Have you figured anything out?
We are now on the 36mg and on the first day I thought , what have I done…He was worse then before medicine. But I gave it to him again the next day and he had a great day! He seems to be doing good on it. We are on day 6 and his concentration and impusive behavior is much improved. His excessive talking and “smart” mouth has also been less and less. He is eating and sleeping well also.
Fascinating. My doctor suggested we try the 36mg on the weekend rather than during the week. I’m tempted, but he had a great day yesterday (after several days of outbursts at school and super chattiness at school). Sooooo nice that there is someone out there on the same meds with the same aged son. We will see how today and tomorrow go before we decide. I’m happy your son is doing better!
We tried Concerta with my 8 yo dd for one week. Noticed little change for 6 days so the doc recommended taking it this past Sat and Sun to see if we saw any difference at home. In the am I was so hopeful; she and I actually had a long talk, not a one-way one as usual, she actually didn’t cut me off or keep on talking going topic to topic. I was very encouraged. Then, a couple of hours later she was on the floor crying in a fetal position saying she was depressed and anxious and didn’t know why; she does know what these words mean. Last time we will give it to her since the doc said to watch out for moodiness. So, have a call out to he doc to see if we should try a different med.
Ok, so we have been doing great on the 36mg started mid November. Now I am seeing him get very angry in the evenings over very silly things. This was him before but he has not been this way on medicine until now?? Why would it change now after 30+days? He also has been picking his fingers very bad. Any thoughts??
Our 14 yr old has been on 27mg of Concerta for maybe 6-8 months. The change was unbelievable! If anyone could have been a fly on the wall they would not have believed the monster we were living with.
Concerta changed all of that. However in the evenings sometimes the monster creeps out again and that can be hard to take.
