ADHD Medications

Sports

My son is 9 years old and takes concerta. He seems to have lost his enthusiasm when playing sports since taking the medicine. Was always one of the best on the team. Now he doesn’t hustle.  Anyone else experience this?

Lethargy is definately a side effect of the meds. In fact, if you accept the hunter /gatherer theory of ADD than this is clearly a case of forcing a hunter to be a gatherer through meds.

IMHO, in this society there are times we have to fit in like during school.

In his off times you may want to cut back the meds so he can play aggressivly. In the end school is more important than sports so you need to do what you can to insure success.

My son never liked being on the meds and we did not force him except during school and homework.

Good luck

Concerta didn’t work for my son, who is very active in sports. We went through several medications until we found one that worked (Focalin) but every med is different for every child. You are the best judge of the side effects (along with your son, of course). So, if you notice he is drastically different and has lost his enthusiasm for something he loved, I would encourage you to try another medication. It’s always hard trying to balance the benefits with the side effects. But he should not be a completely different person while on medication. If it changes him too much, it may not be the right med. Keep trying and try to be patient. Took us four years to find the right mix. Good luck!
