Parents of ADHD Children

Startnig a support group

I am thinking of starting an ADHD support group at my daughters school but I’m not sure where to begin. If anyone has any suggestions, tips, etc. I would appreciate the feedback!

Talk to parent coordinator first or get in touch with parents on your own. More voices heard will be more effective

I started a support group and it’s been great. You’ll find there are lots of parents like yourself who will be very grateful for the opportunity to talk and support one another!

There are a few ways to go about starting a group and sometimes you have to try a couple to hit on the right one. Beginning with your daughter’s school is a good first step. Talking to the school nurse, your daughter’s teachers, and the school counselor will help. You may even want to talk to the district special education department.

Since as parents of ADHD children we’re not a terribly big group you may want to look at other options as well. People are busy nowadays so getting consistent attendance is not that easy.

I started with CHADD which has a wide audience, but be prepared to get sales calls too! is another good one. Eventually you’ll find there are people who attend consistently.

It’s sooooo helpful to hear from other parents who are going through the same types of problems. Being the parent of an ADHD child can feel pretty lonely, and frustrating, at times so finding that type of support is really worthwhile. Good luck!
