Just Diagnosed With ADHD (Children)

Taking Intuniv for 1 month

Hi, my son was diagnosed with ADHD about 5 weeks ago. The main issue we have is impulsiveness and aggression. We tried Adderall 5 mg for only 2 days but stopped because of crying and mood swings. We are now on Intuniv 1 mg, which helped a lot the first week or two. When he increased to 2 mg, it caused severe drowsiness so we decreased back to 1 mg. Now it seems to have no effect. I’m sure I’ve been impatient with the side effects, and perhaps we should have stayed on the 2 mg. Anyone have any similar experiences?

Intuniv does require more patience than stimulants. It can take several weeks to see efficacy and it often starts with severe drowsiness. However, most patients find the drowsiness will wear off after a couple weeks. My son took it a couple years ago for a while and he fell asleep during the day at the drop of a hat the first couple days but it kept improving over time until it was no longer a problem. Some doctors have patients take it before bed too.

There’s a FAQ on Intuniv on Additudemag.com as well: http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/8177.html

My son takes guanfacine (short acting Intuniv) and he was a zombie the first few weeks.  We are thinking of switching to Intuniv soon, but I’m dreading starting all over with a new med.  anyways, I would give it time.

My son also took guanfacine, and at home after a few weeks he was no longer falling asleep unless we spent long amounts of time in the car (he used to never fall asleep in the car) but, he was easy to wake up once we reached our destination.  He is no longer on that medication for school behaviour issues, but my point is like the others, to give it more time.

Thanks for your responses. We increased it to 2mg again 5 days ago and are seeing great results at school. He’s only taken a nap one day, but that was after swimming lessons. It seems to really help with his impulsiveness and he’s more patient. Hope it lasts!

We have used Intuniv in the past and didn’t stick with it very long because of the sleepiness. Now we had to start back on it after a 1 year break. I have seen a great turn around about the the first week. We upped the dosage to 2mg also…We are giving it to him in the evening either before dinner or after so it will help him sleep . He has napped over the weekend and been tired, but we have had such a turn around at home and school. Like your family, we are going to wait it out. Good luck!
