Anxiety and ADHD

What's the truth with kids and remeron

I am married with 2 kids. I am a teacher and my husband is in soft-ware development. Both my husband and I have families with suicidal/ depressive/ bi-polar/anxiety histories. I struggled with undiagnosed anxiety/depression/a.d.d./ insomnia/poor appetite all my life. Weighed 98 pounds (I €™m 5 €™5 €-so nearly anorexic LOOKING) until I was 40 years old. Any amount of stress made me nauseous and unable to sleep, and when u have the above stated issues-you are starving and tired pretty much 24/7. Finally saw a psychiatrist at age 39, after various undiagnosed breakdowns and a slew of unsuccessful anti-dep trials prescribed by a clueless but well-meaning family doc. Finally see a PSYCHIATRIST , duh?????, and he puts me on REMERON and it CHANGED MY LIFE. I eat and sleep just like a normal person, imagine that !!!!!! I gained 40 pounds at first, but am not too heavy now and I sleep like a baby EVERY SINGLE NIGHT :0)  .................................
BUT now I have a son, age 12, diagnosed with A.D.D./insomnia/ poor appetite. Resisted meds for years, relented,  put him on Adderall and it improved his focus tremendously . We initially tried Vyvanse but it INCREASED his anxiety. Adderall has really improved school performance BUT increased poor appetite and insomnia which in turn has created serious depression and irritability. We are trying PROZAC now and he is getting worse nausea than ever so it €™s hard to tell if its helping. I love this child with all my heart, but he is a total nightmare to live with. EVERY anti-dep made my anxiety, nausea and insomnia worse EXCEPT for REMERON.  I desperately want it for my child, can €™t bear to watch this struggle any longer, want to give him REMERON but pediatrician won €™t prescribe it. LOOKED AT ME LIKE I HAD 2 HEADS! We are also doing psychologist, melatonin but it €™s not the only answer. Stomach anxiety is hell, and only those who have lived with it can truly understand . REMERON to me has been like ...... Insulin to a diabetic. What is so wrong with it-?????? I read of kids younger than him on it.  What is the TRUTH, how can I help my child ??????  I have been on it for 6 years and am very healthy. Someone help me understand!!!!!!!! PLEASE !!!!!!!!! Sometimes I don €™t think my beautiful son is gonna make-it.

Hello,  take a look to this natural supplement that is helping a lot of people to reduce depression, anxiety, fatigue and insomnia: http://www.iherb.com/Swedish-Herbal-Institute-Adapt-232-Herbal-Adaptogen-Formula-40-Capsules/36209#p=1&oos=1&disc=0&lc=en-US&w=swedish herbal institute adapt-232, science behind&rc=1&sr=null&ic=1

I don’t know the dose for children, I’m an adult and take just a fraction of a capsule three times per day, God Bless you and your family!

I’m sorry to hear that your son is struggling. If he is still on the Adderall, the Prozac interaction with amphetamines may be what is causing his issues. These medications should not be taken together. Dr. Charles Parker explains the interaction in this article: http://www.corepsych.com/2006/11/adderall-prozac-and-paxil-problem-not-solution/.

I also recommend reading this article about managing multiple medications, by Dr. Larry Silver: http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/2808.html

Follow your intuition and keep fighting to find the right medication for your son.

Do the same thing for your son that you did for yourself, have him see a psychiatrist. Remeron is not a med a pediatrician should prescribe, as children should be closely monitored by a psychiatrist while starting this medication. Additionally keep in mind just because the Remeron was so effective for you, it doesn’t mean it will help him.  I myself took Remeron and it did nothing to relieve anxiety or insomnia, however since you share the same biology there’s a good chance it might. A child psychiatrist will have many options and will be able to determine what works best for him. Good luck sometimes it’s a hard puzzle to figure out.

Well Remeron is a potent NRI, like Strattera. Limited, but solid scientific studies suggest that is actually can treat ADHD. However it has been researched mostly for the treatment of Depression and Panic Disorder.

Noradrenalin Reuptake Inhibitors benefit some people with ADHD. Remeron appears to be very similar to Strattera in effect. However, it is possible either drug has undiscovered other effects on brain biology that are as of yet unidentified, so its possible there are some differences.

Reboxetine might cause a slight drop in Serotonin levels in the Prefrontal Cortex, whereas my understanding is that because Strattera also slightly inhibited the reuptake of Serotonin (Reboxetine does but even less) well Strattera may be somewhat less likely to cause adverse mood reactions, perhaps.

Both drugs occasionally WORSTEN mood strongly. I am a person who experiences such an effect unfortunately, even though it helped moderately but solidly with my focus and attention.
