I am very interested in SPECIFIC goals for my twin sons who are now in 6th grade and struggling at school. What specific things (I.e. IEP goals, etc.) can the RSP and the general ed. teacher do to help my boys excel? How do I help them focus on a “strength based” approach? Thanks so much!

I will also attend.  My question: my son’s school isn’t set up for “distraction free” assessment.  They do not have separate rooms for a child to take a test.  So, he is taken out of the classroom and placed in another classroom with about 1/2 the kids but the kids are other kids who also need distraction free due to ADHD, LD, etc.  The group tends to have more behavioral issues (i.e. talking out, getting out of seat, etc.) than the regular classroom.  So really neither environment proves to be “distraction free.”

I would like to attend.  I’ve only recently learned that my son likely has ADD and I would like some foundational understanding of what are standard accomodations I should expect the school to make and what may be helpful but non-standard.

I want to help him be successful both in school and with homework, so I would also like to know what are some environmental conditions I should ensure are in place to prevent homework from being such an epic struggle.  Thanks.

I will be there…I am struggling at this very moment trying to convince my son’s teachers that he isn’t just lazy!!  He has been diagnosed with ADD, and I believe he has dyslexia also but haven’t been able to get him tested.  His language arts teacher seems to think he just doesn’t apply himself.  Maybe he doesn’t, maybe because he doesn’t feel like he can.  He has told me that he can’t read the words they are testing him on and if someone could read them to him he thinks he might do okay.  Ugh.  Things move slow in the school system.

Planning

Posted by kfive on Oct 13, 2012 at 9:17am

The high school issues laptops to all students. My daughter can’t handle the responsibility. It is such a distraction and highway to serious trouble, that last year led to HUGE consequences. This year I won’t let her have it, so her 504 plan calls for alternate assignments and communication. One teacher keeps asking her to use a computer for assignments. The school wants to avoid anything that would have a teachers do anything extra—isn’t that what an accommodation is? It’s been stated that she is missing out on the richness of education that the technology provides. Believe me I know what the technology provides, and she doesn’t need it.

I will be attending.  Thanks so much for taking the time to do this Mr. Cohen.

My two older kids (12 and 9) are twice exceptional and I am interested in strategies or approaches you might take with the school district in light of the fact there is not a federal law that explicitly covers this situation.  They both have 504s for ADHD, reading disabilities, dysgraphia and anxiety.

I plan to attend. I’m looking for ways to better educate my son’s (15 yrs - soph) teachers on ADHD. Last year, one teacher made his life miserable.  Geography + nightly homework + inattentive ADHD = no homework submitted.  He scored well on tests but had issues submitting homework (no surprise there!).  He would NOT use his 504 accommodation - submitting an assignment via email on the same day it was due - because he thought this teacher would be MAD at him. When I finally figured this out, I had to insist he use this accommodation. In my communication with this teacher, I observed her attitude toward my son become more negative throughout the year. It’s no wonder he has self-esteem issues. How can I better educate his teachers - without insulting their intelligence (or lack of education on this topic)? What tools do you recommend? How can I avoid being labeled a *helicopter mom,* yet still advocate for my son?

I need all the help I can get to be assertive and educated in obtaining the help that Monty needs to excel in life. The school district has been very helpful, but I don’t feel that all of the things available to assist Monty are cohesive with one another—all the teachers and assistants aren’t properly communicating with each other and to ME! The worst offender is the physician treating Monty.
