ADHD EXPERT WEB CHAT: Managing Your Adult ADHD—You Can Do It!

Are you an adult struggling with ADHD symptoms? Join internationally recognized ADHD expert Michele Novotni, Ph.D., as she hosts the “Managing Adult ADD: You Can Do It” Web Chat on Tuesday, October 16th, 2012, from 1p.m. to 2p.m. EST (12 p.m. to 1 p.m. CST and 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. PST). The Web Chat is free and open to all ADDConnect members.

This is the first of ten ADHD Awareness Week Web Chats that address topics that will help you better manage symptoms, your family, and your life. They are hosted by top experts in the field, all of whom are contributors to ADDitude magazine and ADDitudeMag.com. See the full line-up here.

To participate, you’ll need to:

5. Sign in to ADDConnect any time during 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. EST on Tuesday, October 16th, 2012. On the day of the event, there will be a support-group thread called “Managing Adult ADD: You Can Do It Web Chat”—click on it and start posting your questions, experiences, and helpful replies to others’ questions. From time to time, you may need to refresh your Internet browser to see the latest discussion activity.

Hope to “see” you there!

Thanks for the update!
Could you remind me one day before please?  I live in Europe so I have to calculate the time not to miss it!

Question: ADD in Adults seems to be more categorized and studied as a medical condition in the USA.  Although many European Mediterranean countries seem to be literally inhabited by ADDers…no one seems to be aware that their “reality” could be an inherited “medical condition”....

My question to Dr. Novotni: any reliable centers or specialists on ADD in Adults in cities such as Paris or Milan? As I have family in both cities, I have looked up info and sometimes scientific studies on ADD subjects appear, but no signs of an info center for Adults & Women, or specific coaching on issues relevant to ADD.  Hoping to receive from you an indication of where to address myself to,.

Keep up the great job you are doing!  Allerim

Posted by Allerim13 on Oct 08, 2012 at 4:38pm

I would like to attend.  Please send /post more information!

My question:  I know we can’t be “cured” but can we actually learn work-arounds that we can still do when not taking medication or after it has worn off?

I only seem to be able to do successful coping skills and work efficiently while my medication is working.  When it wears off, I go back to being scattered and fidgety like normal and my thinking goes back to having dozens of ideas crowding in at the same time and everything I’ve learned goes out the window!

I will be there.

One of my biggest problems is that I become severely depressed with my recurring problems of losing things, almost instant loss of memory, and when I am unable to perform seemingly “easy” tasks on the internet.  I might have great resolve to perform a task the next day, and then be totally disintersted the next day, almost like I’m a different person.

I am 57 yr. old female. Diagnosed with ADD a year ago by a psychiatrist when I went in to see him about my depression meds seeming to not work. He is not a specialist in ADHD. I have been taking between 20-30 mgs Adderall/day (most recently settling on 25). It seems to help somewhat, but in general, I find I am having increasing problems with working memory and a sense of being overwhelmed with work (which probably is a reality), anxiety (related to the overwhelm) and some depression.
I decided I wanted a more thorough evaluation, so my PCP referred me to a neurologist, whom I will see in a couple of weeks for a 90 minute appt. Reading his bio online - he looks like he has expertise in autism and brain injury, but I see nothing about ADHD.
I filled out a pre-visit questionnaire, but it didn’t seem to get at ADHD issues. Mostly about brain injuries, of which I have none.
My question for you - what questions should I be sure to ask him during the visit? And is there info I should be prepared to share with him (whether or not he asks) in order to get the best evaluation possible?
Thank you - and sorry this is so long.

I am 55, unemployed and gone from one menial job to the next, sometimes because I gave up trying to learn, sometimes after being demoted, sometimes fired. I wasn’t even sure anything was wrong with me, since I only learned about Predomantly Inattentive ADD after I got my last job. Now I know I have it, but I don’t have a clue how to look for a job knowing I have it. I can’t believe anybody who has what I have could go to university, let alone hold a good job, since I can’t do anything.

My questions centers on how best to support myself and my family (older two kids have inattentive ADHD).  In other words, how do you decide where to put your efforts and what has the biggest pay off in terms of family sanity?

Question: I am 38, married female. I have been plagued with the inability to focus, get motivated and stay on task. I have had this issue since about 7th grade. I work for myself, so I have no boss to hound me to get my work done, so I will sit at my desk for hours and hours, day after day, after day, getting nothing done. I stare at my monitor, google ideas, or attempt to organize the work I need to do, my desk, my office, so that when I actually do start working, I can do so in a clean space.

I’ll say “today I’m not going to get sidetracked, I’m going to X amount of work done”, then I’ll end up vacuuming my curtains, or cleaning the top of the refrigerator which has NOTHING to do with my work!

I can’t take ADHD meds (most likely anyway) as I have horrible reactions to just about every medication I’ve ever taken with the exception of OTC meds.

I feel paralyzed. I’m going broke. I’m incredibly frustrated with myself!! Thankfully, my hubby is of the attitude that it’s his responsibility to support us, so he does not get made at me… but he should!

Where can I start to get this under control? Please help

On a side note, my stepson, who lives with us 50% of the time also has ADHD. He is 11 and I see him struggling with the same issues. He is on meds, that were just increased, and seems to be a bit better.  But I hate to see him struggle his entire life like I do.

If my work schedule allows, I hope to be there!

My general question is: What advice can you give re: setting reasonable expectations for young adults with ADHD who have jobs, but are living back at home after completing high school or college?  What can be done to encourage more responsibility and increased awareness/sensitivity to others in the household?

As a simple example, our ADHDer leaves dirty dishes and clothes and his mail, including bills, strewn about the house. He hates when I nag him to put things away, yet he seems to forget that he’s not living by himself, and can’t seem to come up with his own method of remembering to attend to important stuff first (like bills) and put things in their proper place to begin with.  If he’s doing similar things at work, I imagine he won’t be able to keep his job very long…

Posted by BF on Oct 16, 2012 at 9:48pm

Our son was recently diagnosed with ADD and depression.  He had to leave college after two years of reasonable success because he shut down in the fall of his junior year, stopped going out to class or to eat, just ordered food in.

He was not comfortable with psychiatrist we found for him and the therapist he’s been seeing the last 9 months wants him to work with an adult ADD specialist.

How do we find a good psychiatrist for this blend of issues as well as a therapist who will take him in SE Pennsylvania?  Currently he is living at home and doing well as long as he is given any major challenge.  But at 21 he wants to learn how to be successfully independent.  And learn how to connect with people and make friends in new ways.  He’s very isolated.

Comment to IhaveaIhasa:  I wouldn’t automatically assume you can’t tolerate ADHD meds, but you should see a doctor who specializes in that area.  I attended a local Chadd seminar recently, where the speaker was a neuropsychiatrist whose focus is on mental health medication management. He mentioned a new test that recently came on the market, which is supposed to identify enzymes that can impact medication metabolism, and assist with choosing the proper med type and dosage. It’s called GeneSightRx and this site describes more: http://www.assurerxhealth.com/patients

IS ANYONE FROM ADDCONNECT WATCHING THIS THREAD?  IF SO, COULD YOU PLEASE REPLY.

For the benefit of everyone else, I phoned them at 646-366-0830 yesterday, and the woman who answered said they had technical difficulties. They were not sure what caused the problems, or when they would be resolved. She apologized, but said she wasn’t sure if they would reschedule Ms. Novotni’s presentation. She indicated that emails would be sent to people who signed up for this chat, and let them know what happened.

I have NOT received any email yet, and wonder if anyone else has??

ALSO, can you clarify what time zone your clock is set to?  It is 1:33 p.m. Central Standard Time where I’m at, yet the time indicated on my posts is 5 hours later, saying 6:33??

Dear ADDConnect Members,

As you may have noticed, we experienced technical difficulties on ADDConnect. The site was slowed to a halt by the unexpectedly large number of people interested in the Adult ADHD Web chat with Michele Novotni.

We are working on a technical fix and will be in touch as soon as we have rescheduled the chat.

Hope to see you there next time!

Sincerely,
The ADDConnect Team
