anyone using ritalin? plz help

It is my 4th day on ritalin immediate release. My doctor told me to take 10mg (1pill) twice a day: 7 am and 4 pm after eating. And the next week i should take it 3 times a day. Until now,no benefit ! Is it normal ? Should i wait ?

I’d say ask the doctor how long it should take to see an effect.  I take 10 mg twice a day at breakfast and lunch so I’m covered during my working hours.  10 mg is a fairly low dose.  For me, it helps with concentration and focus, but does not get me all the way to “normal”.  On days I need focus in the evening, I take 3.  But my body will not tolerate that on an ongoing basis.

Different meds work differently for each of us.  It may take a few tries to get the right med at the right dose, or the right combination of meds at the right doses.  Stay in contact with your doctor.

I can’t add much more to what whizinc already said.  Doctors like to start at low doses and slowly increase them (called titrating) to find the correct dosage for each individual, that dosage where you get maximum benefits without interfering side effects.  Personally, I’m on 20mg of immediate release three times a day, but I’ve always had a high tolerance for medications in general and tend to need the highest dose.  Just keep in contact with your doctor and be honest and they should work with you.

Oh, another thing, on my bottles of Ritalin from the pharmacy, there are little stickers on there that say to take 1/2 hour BEFORE meals.  You mentioned your doctor said to take them after.  ???  You should definitely ask about that, because if you ARE in fact supposed to take them before meals, the eating beforehand may render the pill ineffective.

I guess my doctor said that to be sure that i eat enough. Because ritalin will probably suppress appetite.

10 mg is very low for an adult but, most doctors start you out at a low dose and add 5-10 mgs a week until you feel it working, or they’ll try you on Adderall next, then Concerta ect.  I had to take my meds as soon as I got up and NEVER with food, no matter what anyone tells you never take with food it will smother your meds right out and they wont work at all.  If they upset your stomach then eat a cracker 10 minutes before you take your meds.

Adderall and Ritalin work for about 2-4 hours tops and varies from person to person, mine worked about 2 hours max and if I ate or had coffee forget it, it wouldn’t work at all.  If you eat lunch or breakfast then wait at least 1-2 hours after eating (depending on how much you ate) before taking your meds.

Foods with vitamin C will delete your meds completely, so avoid vitamin C especially orange juice ect.  Many will disagree with me but I want to be honest and help you the best I can with your journey.  Wish someone had gave me the answers.

I haven’t been on meds in about 8 months I decided to go the all natural route and go

You should have an immediate response with Ritalin.  That was my experience.  I would suggest taking a single 20 mg dose and see if you see a difference.

10mg is low and I quickly went to 20mg twice a day and that worked for me.  In fact, I did it on my own as 10mg twice a day was not enough after a week.

You should definitely feel improvement if you are on the right meds and right dosage.

Good Luck!

I hope someone answers you. I was on it for a little while but I was on Provigil previously to that. It took a little while for me to tell the difference but I did focus better on it than the provigil. My Pharmacy was having a hard time getting it or keeping enough stock because so many kids are on it around here.
So I went back on Provigil rather than having it hit or miss.

I’m taking the generic, methylphenidate - 5mg and I am able to take 4-5 tablets a day.  The Ritalin itself was, for some reason, too strong for me, even at the lower dose.  I can feel the effects of the pill usually within 45 minutes and as time goes on, it only lasts 2-3 hours in my system.  Since I’m finished with school and am not working right now, I don’t find the need to take too many each day.  But, when I begin feeling depressed (which is part of my ADHD) I will take another pill.  In the past, the doctor had me on Cymbalta for feeling down and osteoarthritis pain, but I had to get off of it due to bad side effects.  And, it seems part of these effects is feeling low…  Hope you find the right dose/medication and wishing you a very happy holiday season.
