focalin side effects in my 5 y/o

my sons medication was changed by his foster parents to focalin XR and when i got him back his psychiatrist upped his meds now his experiencing tics, more aggression and behavioral challenges. his psychiatrist jus told me his lowering his meds jus a little hopefully the tics will go away. idk what to do im worried!

Focalin xr made my sweet hyper just 7 year old son aggressive and angry.  He was on the lowest dose. These meds can really impact a child. It was frightening how angry my my previously rambunctious but loving child became.

My 8 year old started on a low dose of focalin xr and it made him have tics. The doctor switched him to a non stimulant Intunive and it seems to be helping him a lot better.

There are many other medications to try for ADHD. Here’s a chart of all the options and the differences between each. He may have a completely different, more beneficial response, to a different type of stimulant. My son could not take Focalin at all.

Penny, thanks for the chart.  That is very helpful.  My son also had difficulties with focalin, becoming angry and aggressive.  He is now on the Daytrana patch and Intuniv.  He is happy, he eats and no aggression at all!

I recommend talking to your doctor about making a change.  In our case, we found that the pediatrician did not have knowledge of the medications available, even though she was a behavioral specialist.  My son sees a psychiatrist how handles his meds.

My son has been on focalin xr for 3 years now.  This was the first med we tried that actually worked for him.  As of yet, I have not noticed any tics in him.

I’m curious, what did you all notice in your children when they took it?  Maybe I just don’t see it.  He has a med check coming up and I’ve been debating on trying a non-stimulant now that he’s older.  I don’t like the crash he experiences at the end of the day when the meds wear off.

When he was in first grade he started on Ritalin. It worked well for him.But Focalin has been a lifesaver for my son. He is able to focus and control himself and act normal when he takes
It.  He does great in school . He has had less side effects with focalin. He makes and keeps friends. Without it he gets out of control at times and looses friends and gets out of control.
Vyvance and adderall were the nightmare
For him.  It made him angry mean and violent .it also
Made him have very strange scarey outbursts when he was coming off of it. He would get that crazy look in his eyes . Like a lost soul.
So grateful I have my son back because of focalin.
It’s so strange how each kid is so different.
