strattera might be working

Hi all, I tried Strattera about a year ago. Got a sample pack with five 10mg, five 18mg, five 25 mg, twenty 40mg. I was all tired all the time. When I went up to 40mg I literally could not stay wake. Had to roll down my car window and slap my face to stay awake long enough to get home. Well, my pdoc wanted me to try it again and go really slow titrating up. I took 10mg for 14 days, 18mg for 14 days, 20mg (two 10mgs) for two weeks, and now I’m on 25mg. The goal is 40mg. I’m a PM. On the lower doses I could tell it helped with focus and concentration. But I had no motivation. With the 25mg I’m feeling a little more energy and self motivation. I’m so hoping this works cuz I can’t take stimulants, it doesn’t matter which one I try I always feel short of breath, and believe me, I’ve tried them all! Has anyone else had luck with very slow titrating?

did you ever get your thyroid checked?  Get a complete blood work on thyroid, b-12, & everything that could cause tireness.  Even my 12 year old son had low thyorid for awhile.  That was when he was on 30 mg Concerta.  He’ never showed tireness (except in morning - when we non-morning people felt the same).  But he’s always had very pale skin and had moments of feeling faint.  The Concerta made him irritable & very unreasonable (besides the faint feelings) - that I researched for something else & found (40 mg) Vyvanse that he’s responding much better.  Can’t say Vyvanse is your “magic pill” but there’s plenty choices with ADHD med’s.  Get blood work OK - then go from there.  Could be Strattera is not right for you.

Sorry to hear this.  I agree that you should have your thyroid checked.  My daughter is on Strattera 80 mg.  She was given a starter pack that increased the dosage every 5 days until she reached the 80 mg.  She was most tired when the dosage increased but that passed over time.  She is however more tired at the end of the day and has trouble staying up past her regular bedtime than before she was on any medication.  The Strattera is working (not perfectly but we notice a difference) and helping her stay pretty focused and even when she chose not to take it one day, she was not herself and she felt the difference!  She also takes Ritalin, only 5 mg, on school mornings, which also is helping we think.  Good luck.  Hope you are able to get some relief and find what works for you, but be aware that Strattera takes about 6 weeks to reach its full effect.

I can only tell you what happened with my daughter.  She also did not like being so tired but like I said it passed.  She has been on 80 mg about 8 weeks. Do your best to keep at it.  I know that when she exercises even when she is tired or has a lot of school work, it helps her feel better and gives her a boost of energy.  Maybe B vitamin would help too.  Ask your md

Thx for the replies. I really think the key factor for me has been titrating up on Strattera very slowly. With every increase I feel a little tired but not the overwhelming tiredness I felt when using the starter pak. Lower and slower increments seem to work better.
Moe, I did have my thyroid checked, get it done routinely every year and its always ok. I take my vitamins too. Wish it was thyroid. Would be easily and cheaper to treat. I’ve always been a tired person. That’s the way the add affects me. I only have energy and focus when I’m interested in something.  I’m hoping the Strattera works.

Pezza, if it were me I’d stay on 40mg until you can get into doc. Then ask if you can increase by 10mg each week or two until you get to 80mg. I’m a poor metabolizer so the Strattera stays in my body 3 times longer than normal.  According to crazymeds.com the tiredness is related to too high of a dose too fast. I’m convinced going up slowly is the key to success with Strattera. Let me know how you do. smile

I tried Strattera and I didn’t really get much from it. When I came off of it, however, I really had a terrible depression, probably the lowest I have ever been. Just telling you to be careful, if you plan to go off it make sure you are in a happy environment or on vacation or something like that:) Good luck to you!

I have tried Vyvance, and recently concerta- both made me irratable and short tempered a lot more often-  I also felt it stole my memory after a period of time, couldn’t remember anything and felt like it really took a toll out of me to put thoughts together, but I had energy to get things done (as long as no one was there to irritate me or the thought process wasnt too involved) ... tried the Strattera and it made me soooooo much more calmer and clear headed. My heart rate rested at a marathon runners- comparable and I could think and remember things but found I was sooooooooooooooooo tired that it really ate my energy. Also it made my tummy feel horrible- and spent a lot of time in the washroom… after being on it for about two months I was still tired but some of the sickness feelings came every other day instead of daily….my last day on I woke up feeling absolutely wonderful- mentally- clear headed and full of thoughts- refreshed and happy (could have to do with the 12 hours sleep). I was in bliss for that moment but went on to Concerta to see if I could combine both body and mind…. I felt a difference the moment I changed meds. My head got foggy and I could feel the storm moving in.  I hadn’t had any blow ups or arguments for 2 months and then within a day i was arguing with my daughter, and feeling cranky- for lack of a better word.
If only there was a medicine that could tie the brain and the body together.  ahhhhhhh it would be a dream- a delightful dream.  I stopped the Strattera only because it did make my body feel sick and I was hoping my next trial could bring both aspects together (hasnt worked so far).... but I would rather feel sick and happy, with a clear mind than irritated and aggressive.  hopefully somewhere someone will have an answer…... all the best!
