Parents of ADHD Children

wellbutrin and nortriptyline
Keywords:

Has anyone’s kids taken these together? My 12 year old daughter has been on 450mg of wellbutrin. She said it helps her feel less stressed but many of the ADHD symptoms are still there—trouble focusing, initiating tasks, overwhelm with school work, lack of motivation. Psychiatrist prescribed low dose (10mg) of nortriptyline to take in evening and staying on wellbutrin for now. He thinks she may eventually go off wellbutrin. I read somewhere on this site not to take these 2 together. I mostly trust this psychiatrist, but just looking to hear some real like examples with this combo.

Thank you!

I use drugs.com to check drug interactions with their online tool, and these two come up with a red “Major Interaction” warning about the potential for seizures.

I would bring the interaction warning to your psychiatrist’s attention (he probably already knows) and let him know you’re just not comfortable with that combination of medications.

You’re well within your rights to reject a suggested medication or combination and request something different.

I’m wondering why she is taking off-label medications for ADHD instead of the medications that are the recommended first-line treatments. There are both stimulants and non-stimulants. Maybe you’ve tried these medications without success, you don’t say.

Take a look at the medication reviews on ADDitudeMag’s new Treatment Reviews section:  https://www.additudemag.com/category/explore-adhd-treatments/treatment-reviews/. Here’s the page for Wellbutrin: https://www.additudemag.com/medication/wellbutrin/.

***I highly encourage you to post this question to ADDitude’s new discussion forums, as well. I think your question would get a lot of attention in the Treating Your Child forum:  https://www.additudemag.com/forums/forum/parenting-adhd-kids/treating-your-child/. ADDconnect is transitioning over to this new forum now.***

Hi Penny,

Thank you so much for your reply. I was wondering what those new boards were—I am on here infrequently. I posted to the board as you suggested.

She had tried concerta with little success. Her psychiatrist thinks wellbutrin, SSRI’s and stimulants are the 3 ways to treat ADHD and she also has anxiety. It is really hard to find a psychiatrist who has openings or else I’d get a 2nd opinion. Very difficult!
